Dear Dalton

To my youngest son,

It's been a rough few days for us.  I write this letter after we had the biggest blow up yet between you and Jordan.  It started as a fight over a ball, and ended with your fingers being bent backwards and you slapping Jordan in the face.  And one could guess what happened after that.  Mike was furious to say the least.  We had to leave the house because he felt he couldn't contain his anger.

I don't think we need to rehash all the details.  We probably both remember them vividly, even if you are reading this years later.

So here is what I want to talk about instead.  I want you to know I have your back.

One of the statements that was said (in a moment of extreme anger) was that you were not welcome to come back to the house since you had hurt Jordan.

When Mike said that, there was no question.  I was leaving with you.  Because we are a family and I have your back.  You are my son.  You make mistakes.  I am your mom.  I make mistakes.

But like I told Mike, we are a family of second chances.  We get do-overs.  You are allowed to redeem yourself.

Being a pre-teen is hard.  Being a pre-teen in a house with another pre-teen of the opposite sex is harder.  Being in a household with two middle schoolers who have been thrust into a relationship because their parents are together is just trouble waiting to happen.

I am so sorry for the things that were said that hurt you.  I am so thankful that you have thick skin and will come back from this without much trouble.

You really are a good kid.  You push every single limit.  You drive me crazy.  Yet, I see so much of myself in you.

I love your passion and relentless nature.
I wish you weren't so passionate and bullheaded all the time.

I love how you live without boundaries.
I hate how you live without boundaries.

You are smart and charming, which will make you an incredible adult.
You are smart and charming, which will make your teen years a mother's nightmare.

But above all, you do have a good heart.  I have seen it.  I know it.  I am thankful for it.

So I will end this letter with the saying I repeat to you most often...

"Dalton, use your powers for good and not evil!"

I love you son.  Always will.

Love,

Mom
